Recent research suggests that the most common type of hair loss, male pattern baldness, can be triggered by faulty hair-making progenitor cells in the scalp. Researchers long believed that men whose hair progressively thins starting with a receding hairline, and then stretching to the crown lacked a sufficient number of these cells. Rather, it appears that the cells are merely unable to complete their normal development and mature to a fully-functioning state.
A Hair Transplant is the most common surgical treatment for hair loss today.
Hair Transplantation is a surgical technique that moves hair follicles from a part of the body called the ‘donor site’ to a bald or balding part of the body known as the ‘recipient site’. It is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness. In this minimally invasive procedure, grafts containing hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding, (like the back of the head) are transplanted to the bald scalp.
Many questions arise in the mind when a person is about to undergo the treatment. There are a couple of things to familiarize before going for Hair Transplant. We shall take a brief look into them for better understanding.
Who is a Good Candidate for Hair Transplant?
A person is a good candidate for a Hair Transplant when they have a stable supply of donor hair which is adequate to cover the current and future areas of hair loss. Since it is very difficult to assess the long-term stability of donor hair and the extent of future hair loss when patients are very young, it is best to wait to have a Hair Transplant until at least the age of 25. An individual with very little hair might not be advised to undergo hair replacement surgery.
The only way to know if you are a candidate for a Hair Transplant is to attend a confidential consultation. A qualified consultant can educate you on hair loss and the methods of treating it, and can then evaluate your personal situation. From this, the determination will be made as to your candidacy. A candidate will be carefully assessed as to the cause of hair loss (alopecia), the family history, and the progression of hair loss.
What to expect after Hair Transplant?
The outcome of the Hair Transplant will work differently for everyone: Everyone is different. Therefore, before going for a Hair Transplant surgery, it is important to prepare your mind that regrowth of hair is different for every person. Your Hair Transplant surgery depends on the quantity of hair you have in your donor area. Also, getting a Hair Transplant does not guarantee you a head full of hair.
Can Transplanted Hair be treated like a normal hair?
Although you must be very gentle for the first week after Hair Transplant surgery, normal shampooing, brushing and hair care can be resumed after ten days since, by this time, the grafts are firmly in place. You can also have a haircut at this point. There is nothing fragile about the transplanted hair. It behaves exactly the same as the rest of your normal hair.
Is Hair Transplantation a permanent procedure?
Hair Transplantation is 100% permanent. The hair that is transplanted stay there for lifetime because the hair that is used in the process of transplantation is taken from permanent zone. So, they stay forever. Whether the transplantation is done using Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), the donor hair is taken from permanent zone of the scalp that is back and side of the head. This hair is not affected by baldness.
Is Hair Transplant surgery painful?
Hair Transplant has different types in regards to how we harvest donor hair. During the procedure the patients are completely numb. However, patients who receive strip may have some pain on donor area for a day or two after Hair Transplant. FUE transplant is generally painless or it has very minimal pain after Hair Transplant.
After Hair Transplant surgery, your scalp may be very tender. You may need to take pain medications for several days. Your surgeon will have you wear a surgical dressing over the scalp for at least a day or two. Your surgeon may also prescribe an antibiotic and/or anti-inflammatory drug to be taken for several days following surgery. Most people are able to return to work two to five days after surgery.
What are the vital post surgery precautions?
Special care is required for the transplanted area, especially during the initial days after Hair Transplant. Since follicles are fragile in the area after the transplant, it is mandatory not to touch the head anywhere during the initial days after surgery. Keep the area around your scalp clean throughout the recovery phase. You will feel soreness and a numb sensation in the places where the incision has been made. Understand the medications and their frequency correctly and do not attempt to self-treat yourself in any way. The area must be shielded from sun. You are also recommended wearing a shower cap while taking shower, but usually shampooing can be started few days after surgery.
Recovery after the operation takes time. And finally, keep yourself busy with other activities apart from obsessing about when new hair will grow.
